From the book, POWER POST PLAY

To be successful, the pump fake must in all ways appear to be a power shot attempt. The offensive player must first obtain a parallel position in front of the backboard. While keeping his knees bent and rear-end down, the shooter fakes a power shot by showing the ball to the defense as his eyes focus on the target. His feet must remain stationary, and his arms should be extended fully overhead, showing the ball to the defenders. It is important for the ball to go above the head on the fake. A head or shoulder fake is not needed to draw defenders off their feet. Showing the ball is the key! The body should remain still and ready to power up with the shot once the defender has committed.
